On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, SRUK joins the initiative 11th February to give visibility to the role of women in research and to promote actions that lead to greater gender equality in science.
Between the 1st and the 15th of February, SRUK will celebrate the International Day of Women and Girl in Science with events all around the United Kingdom. We will meet the women scientists who changed the world in the past, to work on changing the future and inspiring the new generations.
WOMEN AND GLOBAL CHALLENGES

An all-day event that will focus on women as a key group that requires specific and immediate participation for society to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, proposed by the United Nations, before 2030. We will explore how most of these global challenges (access to education, hunger, war and forced migration, the wage gap, etc.) mainly affect women, while there is a lack of gender representation in several of the managerial fields addressing these challenges. It will also explore how women use science and technology to provide solutions to gender problems, improving their status and well-being.
As a second part of the event, a roundtable will evaluate the real impact of campaigns to encourage girls in STEM disciplines in the United Kingdom and Spain. A dialogue will be opened between the two scientific systems and explore ways in which both systems can improve their gender representation throughout the scientific career.

An outreach activity for children between 8 and 10 years. A brief history of several women scientists will be explained in less than 5 mintues. Children will then have the opportunity to build a diorama about the women scientist of their choice using lego.
Una actividad divulgativa para niños de 8-10 años. La actividad consistirá en varias charlas muy breves (menos de 5 minutos) en la que se presentara de forma atractiva la historia de varias científicas. Los niños tendrán luego la oportunidad de construir un diorama con piezas de lego sobre la científica presentada que ellos elijan.

Three woman speakers, from different fields of research, are telling us how they found their way to became researchers. What challenges they have overcome and if they suffered gender discrimination. Attendees and speakers will discuss about the difficulties of women in science and how to motivate little girls, and not so little, to get a good scientific career.
