Involvement in SRUK/CERU

Dr Maria Camacho Encina is a Research Associate of the Vascular Medicine and Biology Theme in the Bioscience Institute, Newcastle University. In 2019, she obtained her PhD in Health Sciences in A Coruña (Spain), working at the Institute of Biomedical Research of A Coruña (INIBIC) studying potential biomarkes for osteoarthritis (OA) development using protein microarrays. She has worked as a postdoctoral researcher and fellow at INIBIC and A Coruña University, respectively, analysing clinical, epidemiological and molecular data to develop prognostic models for rapid OA progression. In 2023, Dr Camacho Encina joined Newcastle University as Research Associated to apply her expertise in biomarker development and bioinformatics working on a British Heart Foundation funded project led by Dr Gavin Richardson. This project aims to identify if cellular senescence can be used as an indicator for successful aged heart transplant. During her career, Dr Camacho Encina has worked in institutions including Arizona, Salamanca and Newcastle Universities as a visiting Fellow.

She became a member of SRUK/CERU in 2022 and joined the Newcastle working group as secretary “en funciones” in October 2023. From November 2023 she is a member of the SRUK radio initiative team.
