London, 9th October 2023. This Monday, the SRUK/CERU Emerging Talent Award ceremony took place at the Spanish Embassy in London, recognising the outstanding contributions to research of Dr Roser Vento-Tormo, winner of the 2023 edition. The SRUK/CERU Emerging Talent Award, which celebrates its 8th edition this year, is part of the collaboration between the Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU) and the Fundación Banco Santander.
The award ceremony counted with the presence of His Excellency Mr José Pascual Marco Martínez, Ambassador of Spain to the UK; Mr Rodrigo Echenique Gordillo, President of the Fundación Banco Santander; and Ms Irene Echeverría Altuna, President of SRUK/CERU. During the reception, Mr Echenique Gordillo remarked that “This CERU Emerging Talent Award plays an important role in Fundación Banco Santander’s commitment to support scientific research, helping to create new opportunities and develop our pool of skilled researchers. This prize also has the very crucial objective of building bridges and nourishing our talent. It makes little sense to watch our researchers emigrate to other countries without closely following their progress”.
Dr Roser Vento-Tormo is the recipient of the 2023 SRUK/CERU Emerging Talent award for her exceptional career in the field of genomics and bioinformatics. Dr Vento-Tormo’s work has been supported by many recognised international funding bodies such as the European Research Council (ERC), the Wellcome Leap, or the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI). In addition, she has received multiple awards, amongst which the Early Career Research Award from the Biochemistry Society (2021) and the Michelson & Science Prize Finalist (2023) are to be highlighted. The team led by Dr Vento-Tormo has used their innovative computational and genomics tools to generate atlases of the human reproductive tissues, leading to transformative advances in the area of women’s health. Dr Vento-Tormo highlighted that “I am profoundly honoured to accept this award from a Spanish society that recognizes the immense talent within our country. This prize not only acknowledges the dedication and collaborative spirit of our team but also underscores the significance of our chosen research area, shedding light on women’s health issues that have long been neglected”.
With the SRUK/CERU Emerging Talent Award, SRUK/CERU supports and gives visibility to early career Spanish scientists carrying out their research in the United Kingdom, while promoting collaborations between these two countries. Ms Irene Echeverría Altuna, president of SRUK/CERU, stated that “In SRUK/CERU, we are humbled to be able to recognise the excellent trajectory of Dr. Roser Vento-Tormo, which exemplifies the enormous value of the work that Spanish researchers carry out in the United Kingdom. We are committed to continuing to bring this work closer to the general public of both countries”.
