Dr Lourdes Barquín Sanmartín is a Lecturer in Spanish at the University of Reading and a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on the acquisition of Spanish as a second and third language, with an emphasis on grammatical transfer and Intercomprehension Competence. She is particularly interested in how Generative AI can support the teaching of complex grammar concepts, such as the imperfect tense.
With a background in secondary MFL teaching in the UK, she is interested in exploring how Spanish language learning progresses from primary and secondary education through to university, both in undergraduate degrees and in language centres (IWLP or Languages for All). At her institution, she is actively involved in outreach, widening participation, and student retention initiatives.
Lourdes currently serves as Social Media Officer for the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland (AHGBI) and represents her institution in the CoARA Working Group on Multilingualism and Language Biases.
