Health-improving progress debated in Bradford at the V SRUK/CERU Christmas Seminar

Bradford, December 1, 2018. The Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU) celebrated the V Christmas Seminar in Bradford this Saturday. This time, the event was on “The science of a healthy diet, sport and wellbeing”. This event, supported by the Ramón Areces Foundation and the University of Bradford, aims to help scientists to communicate their research to society.

This year the seminar has focused on how to improve our wellbeing using the latest discoveries on metabolism and sport. During this seminar, researchers in the field showed their work relating to studies on the metabolism of the human body and how its reaction to different types of diet and exercises is key to ensure an improvement of health.

Throughout the day, attendees were able to enjoy the presentation by the key-note speaker Dr Antonio Vidal-Puig, from the University of Cambridge. In his presentation, Vidal-Puig presented his research on lipotoxicity and metabolic syndrome. In his words, “it is not about being fat, it is about being fit”. Dr Jack Garnham, from the University of Leeds, also took part in the seminar with a talk about health improvement through the practice of sports. Garnham stated that his presentation “tried to explore the global epidemic of type 2 diabetes and obesity, with a particular focus on how exercise and nutritional strategies can combat these lifestyle diseases, as well as improve skeletal muscle condition and fat metabolism”.

After these talks and a series of flash presentations developed by PhD students on this field, the event concluded with a round table where the speakers discussed different points related to their research projects in these areas. The attendees had the opportunity to raise their questions about these investigations. Some myth were clarified like the idea of “hight-fat food intake is not always detrimental”.
