Irene Hoyo Sánchez

Involvement in SRUK/CERU

Hello, I am Irene Hoyo Sánchez and I am from Úbeda, Spain. I always had an interest in languages and arts and that led me to pursue a career in Language Studies. I studied a B.A. in English Studies and a M.A. in Education and Language Teaching at the University of Almería, Spain.

Before joining academia I worked at the International Relationships department at the University of Almería. I also worked in several academic institutions in the UK, including Sheffield Hallam University where I worked as an Associate Lecturer in Spanish Studies and as an Academic Advisor. I currently work at the University of Sheffield as a University Tutor at the School of Languages, Arts and Societies (SLAS), specializing in Spanish Language Modules.

I have a special interest in Inclusivity and Accessibility in teaching practice. My recent scholarship projects focus on Inclusive Language in the Language Classroom. I have presented my research at several scholarship events and conferences, exchanging knowledge and expertise with other colleagues in the same research field.

I am passionate about the Arts, particularly literature, theatre, and cinema. I co-organise the annual MLTC ESP Film Screening Event, which features short films followed by discussions with filmmakers and experts in the field. I also host weekly Language Exchange Cafés that welcome learners of all levels to practice their language skills in a relaxed, engaging setting. I enjoy creating spaces where language and culture are celebrated through collaboration and exchange. I advocate for social and multicultural awareness in language learning, as I believe that languages come alive when embracing cultural diversity.
