On Wednesday, 4th May 2022, at 6:30 p.m., the 2021 SRUK Emerging Talent Award Ceremony will be held at the Spanish Embassy in London. This award, sponsored by the Fundación Banco Santander, aims to recognise and support a promising young Spanish researcher who has developed their career in the UK.

Fundación Santander and SRUK will award Dr Rodrigo Ledesma Amaro, Principal Investigator at Imperial College London, who will give a talk about his research career entitled Taming microorganisms with synthetic biology for a more sustainable world. This talk will be followed by a complimentary Spanish wine reception and networking opportunity among our members and institutions.

All SRUK members are invited to attend the ceremony, which will be hosted for the first time by Mr. José Pascual Marco Martínez, HE Ambassador of Spain to the UK. Once you express your interest in attending the ceremony, your data will be shared with The Embassy of Spain in London, which reserves the right to confirm your registration based on the capacity of the event. The Ambassador will issue official invitations to confirm your attendance and to allow your entrance to the Embassy. Attendance to this event is by invitation only.

Prior to the ceremony, SRUK members are also invited to participate in a networking café with the awardee entitled “The bumpy road from postdoc to Principal Investigator” at 5:30 p.m., also taking place at the Spanish Embassy. This activity will provide SRUK members the opportunity for discussing and sharing with the awardee their impressions about the opportunities and challenges arising from becoming a junior PI.

A number of microgrants are available to cover part of the travel expenses of SRUK members attending both, the networking event and the award ceremony, from outside London. To obtain a microgrant, SRUK members should send an email to [email protected] with a question to the awardee or explaining what they highlight from the awardee’s career in a maximum length of 200 words by the 31st of March 2022.

The amount of the microgrants will be as follows and will depend on the members’ constituency:

SouthWest                   £60
Cambridge                  £25

Midlands                      £40
