In 2025, RAICEX published The White Paper on Gender Policies in Science and Academia. The White Paper reveals the realities of research in academia as well as studying the equal-opportunity policies implemented in 14 countries, across 4 continents, and with the participation of Spanish scientists’ associations that form part of RAICEX. These countries include several European nations. This detailed study reveals inequalities between women and men across all the countries analysed, however, with significant differences in the stage at which these disparities begin to appear. This work reveals a complex landscape, yet one rich with lessons that can help improve the situation of women in science worldwide.
To turn these insights into action, we will hold an event on Thursday the 5th February 2026 at the Embassy of Spain in London to celebrate the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. The event will include a brief presentation of the findings of the White Paper on Gender Policies in Science and Academia, followed by a roundtable discussion where authors of the book, leading voices from academia, scientific funding bodies, and policy-makers will come together to reflect on these findings and, with humility, embrace the changes needed for a more equitable representation of women scientists.
