When? Friday 3rd of March 2023, 17:00 h.

Where? Beecroft Building (Simpkins Lee room) Parks Road Oxford OX1 3PU.

From CERU/SRUK, in collaboration with our friends of the OSS, we’re pleased to announce the 2nd edition of the Oxford Spanish Society Talks, which will focus on science. Our speaker for the event will be Professor Sonia Contera, an internationally renowned nanotechnologist from the University of Oxford. Professor Contera will discuss the new areas of nanotechnology that are opening doors in the fields of physics, medicine, biology, and artificial intelligence.

Abstract: The Role of Nanotechnology in Revolutionizing Medicine.

Nanotechnology allows us to visualize and manipulate matter at the nanoscale, enabling the design and construction of artificial structures and machines using DNA, proteins, and other biological molecules. In this talk, Professor Contera will explore how nanotechnology is transforming medicine in profound ways, from nanomachines that train the immune system to fight cancer, to nanoantibiotics that can eliminate resistant bacteria and vaccines for ending the COVID pandemic. Additionally, nanotechnology is facilitating the study of biology through the framework of physics, creating interfaces with other fields such as bioinspired quantum devices and computer science. This could potentially change not only the future of materials, engineering, and AI, but also the way we think about life itself. Professor Contera will also discuss how nanotechnology may enable us to pose questions such as “what is intuition?” from a physics lab.
