The Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU) is pleased to announce the launch of a new call for the


SRUK/CERU Summer Studentships-Call for UK Hosting Groups


These studentships will allow research groups in the UK to host and train junior researchers (undergraduate/master students) from Spanish Universities.

1. Benefits

  • SRUK/CERU supervisors (hosts) gain leadership and supervision skills, enriching CV with the Honorary Lecturer recognition if the supervision includes ECTS credits for students.
  • Spanish students strengthen practical and language skills.
  • Spanish and British Universities forge new connections.

SRUK/CERU members at any stage of their career interested in hosting a summer student must apply before the 25th of February 2023.


2. Awards offered

  • (*)Fields: Biology, Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Biotechnology, Biotech Companies, Pharmacy, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Physics, Project Management, Mathematics, Informatics, Nutrition and Food Technology.
  • Duration: 2-6 months.
  • Period of the placements: from 1st of June to 31st of December 2023.

3. Eligibility

This grant is open to all SRUK/CERU members, including those holding a regular (students, junior, or senior) or an associate membership, who want to host summer students. Non-members can apply only after submitting their membership registration.


4. Participating Universities

  • Hosting groups must be based in the United Kingdom.
  • Candidate students must be studying in one of the participating universities.
  • The Spanish Universities involved in this call are the following:
  • Only University Francisco de Vitoria offers 400€ per month per student to cover bench or administration fees that can be spent without restrictions.
  • Students coming from UAM will receive their funding from the Erasmus+ programme.
  • Students from UniZar may receive their funding from the Erasmus+ programme or others depending on the dates of the stay.
  • UK supervisors will be officially recognised by the Spanish Universities as Honorary Lecturers only if the supervision includes ECTS credits for students.
  • The studentship from UFV is included in the official undergraduate programme (Actividades curriculares). The UFV will officially recognise this supervision.

5. How will the student-supervisor matching take place?

  1. Once the deadline to receive the applications from Hosting Group supervisors in the UK is reached, SRUK/CERU will send them to the participating Spanish Universities.
  2. Spanish Universities will pre-assign one student to each relevant supervisor and keep a waiting list. They will match the expertise and requirements from the supervisor (e.g., length of stay, degree, experience requirements) with the academic level and predisposition of the students.
  3. Supervisors in the UK will have 10 days to interview the candidates prior to accepting one or more. Interviews will be held from the 20th to the 31st of March 2023.
  4. In the event of a disagreement with the pre-assignation, the University-SRUK/CERU will provide supervisors with the contact of the next student/s in the waiting list.
  5. Universities will arrange the final matching of candidates and supervisor and will reach the student and SRUK/CERU to communicate the final resolution. SRUK/CERU will get in touch with the Hosting Group.

6. Application

  • SRUK/CERU members willing to apply as Hosting Group supervisors must complete the online Application Form.
  • Applications must be submitted in English.
  • Before you submit the online form, please send your CV (max. 2 pages) to [email protected] using the subject line “SRUK/CERU Summer Studentships 2023: [Name of the applicant]”. The same instructions are also detailed on the online form.

The deadline for Registering Hosting Groups is 25th February 2023.

7. Further Details

  • The pre-assignation student-supervisor is designed to facilitate the management of the programme with the main objective to find the optimal match student-supervisor. This selection will be based on the academic criteria of the students and the selection experience from the Spanish Universities in this kind of programmes.
  • The students will need to be fully covered with insurance from either the Spanish Universities, European programmes, or using private funds.
  • At the end of the studentship, SRUK/CERU Researchers (hosts) must complete a survey about their experience with the studentship. This feedback will be used by SRUK/CERU for improving next calls. Hosts may also be invited to participate in scientific outreach activities organised by SRUK/CERU, such as a Science in the Pub event, a Pint of Knowledge event, or publishing a post on the SRUK/CERU Blog.
