Member of the Science Policy Department
I am Lecturer in Chemistry at Swansea University, where I lead the Laboratory for Biobased Nanomaterials. Before starting my position at Swansea University in 2019, I joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as a postdoctoral researcher in 2014 to quickly become Research Scientist and Teaching Fellow for almost 6 years. Prior joining MIT, I was postdoctoral associate at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium) and visiting scholar at the University of Hamburg (Germany). I earned my MSc in Chemical Engineering and my PhD in Theoretical and Computational Chemistry from the University of Granada (Spain). My research focuses on applying computational chemistry, multiscale atomistic modeling, and machine learning to develop more sustainable materials for a circular economy. It includes nanomaterials, biomaterials, and biomass materials, among others. Outside research, I am co-instructor at Station1, an educational non-profit that fosters social-driven innovation, and a member of the advisory board of Sweetwater Energy, an integrated biorefinery. I am passionate about innovation, research and education. I also like to get involved in Science policy, outreach and fostering professional development, and as a result of that interest, I have worked with the Association of Spanish Scientists in the US (ECUSA), first as a Secretary of the Boston chapter and then as a Vicepresident and President of the national board. From ECUSA, I contributed to the development of the Spanish scientific community in US and its connection to Spain, and also to the creation of RAICEX, the “Red de Asociaciones de Investigadores y Científicos Españoles en el Exterior”.
