Andrés Crespo Vieira

I started my studies in 2002, studying the first year of my degree in Biology in the University of A Coruna, Spain, the city where I was born. Trying to have a full university experience (and a bit of independence, flying away from my parents’ home), I continued my BSc at the University of Santiago de Compostela, where I finished my BSc, with a specialization in molecular biology and biotechnology. After that, I started a small research project in the Department of Physiology, Faculty of Medicine. There, in a research project related to Parkinson’s disease, I had the opportunity of working with a monkey (which I miss a lot), and I had his first experience working with rodents. Then, I moved to the Department of Pharmacology, in the Faculty of Pharmacy, joining the Biofarma Research Group, a group specialized in applied pharmacology and schizophrenia. At the same time I was working there, I did my MSc in Biomedicine, and my work developed in that group became my MSc Final Project. In 2010, I moved to the city of Lugo, where I started my PhD, collaborating with two departments ,the Department of Pharmacology and Department of Anatomy and Embryology. Although I collaborated with several studies with different marine toxins, my thesis was focused on neurotoxic compounds and their alterations in mice and rats. After some conferences, several research papers and many frustrations, I finished my thesis in the year 2015. Finally, in 2016 I found a interesting research project in Matthew Grubb’s laboratory, at the King’s College London, where I had the opportunity to study the degeneration and regeneration of the olfactory nerve. After two years in this huge and incredible city, I’ve decided to join the SRUK/CERU to meet other Spanish researchers and help our big community in this country.
