On Monday, 14th November 2022, at 6:30 p.m., the 2020 & 2022 SRUK Emerging Talent
Award Ceremony will be held at the Spanish Embassy in London. This award, sponsored by the
Fundación Banco Santander, aims to recognise and support a promising young Spanish
researcher who has developed their career in the UK.
Fundación Santander and SRUK will award Prof. Susana García López, Principal Investigator at
Heriot-Watt University, the 2020 award. Dr García-López will give a talk about her research
career entitled “Carbon Capture: Bridging the Valley of Death“. The 2022 award will be
awarded to Dr. Nuria Tapia Ruiz, Principal Investigator at Imperial College London. Dr Tapia-
Ruiz will give a talk about her research career entitled “Design of new materials for
sustainable, durable and affordable battery technologies to reach net zero carbon emissions“.
The talks will be followed by a complimentary Spanish wine reception and networking
opportunity among our members and institutions.
All SRUK members are invited to attend the ceremony, which will be hosted by Mr. José
Pascual Marco Martínez, HE Ambassador of Spain to the UK. Please get registered using the
link above. For security reasons, your data will be shared with The Embassy of Spain in London.
Prior to the ceremony, SRUK members are also invited to participate in a networking café with
the awardees entitled “Lessons learnt as a new academic” at 5:30 p.m., also taking place at
the Spanish Embassy. This activity will provide SRUK members the opportunity for discussing
and sharing with the awardees their impressions about the opportunities and challenges
arising from becoming a junior PI.
A number of microgrants (first come, first served) are available to cover part of the travel
expenses of SRUK members attending both, the networking event and the award ceremony,
from outside London. To obtain a microgrant, SRUK members should send a question to the
awardees via the SRUK member zone by the 31st of October 2022.
The amount of the microgrants will be as follows and will depend on the members’
constituency and city of origin:
- SouthWest up to £55
- Cambridge up to £15
- Oxford up to £15
- Midlands up to £45
- Yorkshire up to £95
- NorthWest up to £70
- NorthEast up to £130
- Scotland up to £140
- Northern Ireland up to £30
