SRUK Oxford is hosting an outreach seminar on Monday 28th January by Dr. Angel Herráez, Lecturer in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Universidad de Alcalá, Madrid, Spain). He will talk about how molecules make up everything that is around us, including ourselves: our body, our feelings, our thinking. But have you ever wondered how do we find out about molecules, their properties, their functioning? In this session we will explore molecules using physical models, computer models, and augmented reality. Taking as a lead the green fluorescent protein (GFP) and the structure viewer software Jmol, we will look through how the visualisation of structures offers opportunities for gaining knowledge about molecules as well as for envisaging potential applications. The presentation and discussion will touch aspects of chemistry, structure, biology, technological applications and even how a natural protein may be engineered to achieve new useful properties. As usual, there will be time for questions and an open discussion.
This event is free and open to the general public.
We look forward to seeing you all in Oriel College at 6:30pm!
