Scientific background: Beatriz did her undergraduate studies in Biochemistry at the University Autonoma of Madrid. She carried out her PhD in the department of Immunology and Oncology at the same university in the National Center of Biotechnology. Under the supervision of Dr. Mario Mellado she studied “Application of the surface Plasmon resonance to study the interaction CXCL12/CXCR4”. After completing her PhD in 2012, she moved to Cambridge to work in the laboratory of Dr Stefano Pluchino at the University of Cambridge in the department of clinical neuroscience. Her current research interests involve understanding the biology of extracellular vesicles from neural stems cells and examining their mechanism of action on target cells including immune cells.
Opinion about SRUK: I have had the opportunity to meet many Spanish scientists in Cambridge, but it was several months before I heard about the SRUK/CERU society from one of their members. After just a couple of pints I realized what an amazing group this is and what they are doing to give other Spanish researchers the opportunity to learn about advances in science and meet new people. However, it is more than just a group of Spanish scientists; it is also a tool for dialogue between institutions and nations for those researchers working in the UK that would like science in our home country to progress, and to enhance its international impact. All efforts contribute to the growth of our scientific reputation outside of Spain.
