History

    The Society of Spanish Researchers in the United Kingdom (SRUK/CERU) started in June 2011, but was officially established in July 2012. This is a summary of the History of the Society, depicting each of its activities, meetings, and events.

    Christmas Event in London

    SRUK-CERU Christmas event in London. This year the event included the visit to The Tate Modern Art Gallery in London to participate in a cultural gymkhana. The event is followed by a social lunch and networking at The Heeltap Bar, one of the most popular bars in Southwark, London. After the lunch the winners of the cultural gymkhana received a prize.

    Foundation of Oxford Constituency

    The SRUK- Oxford Constituency is officially constituted with a new board elected: Ibon Santiago (Director), Silvia Corrochano (Vice-Director) and Arantxa Vilalta-Clemente (Secretary). The new constituency also creates a working group to plan and organise local social and scientific events.

    Annual Local Assembly Cambridge

    The SRUK- Cambridge Constituency celebrates their annual local assembly at The Panton Arms Pub in Cambridge to inform about the updates of the constituency and discuss and approve the scientific and social events coming up. A new local constituency board was also elected with Nerea Irigoyen (Director), Anna Vilalta (Vice-Director) and Sandra Blanco (Secretary). The meeting was followed by a new Pint of Knowledge event entitled “Fact or fiction: Archaeology in film, TV or literature” presented by Dr Pía Spry-Marqués.

    Christmas Seminar in The Midlands

    The Midlands Constituency of SRUK celebrates their Christmas Seminar in Sheffield, entitled “Living Factories: Directing the Power of Nature” with the guest speakers: Prof José Ignacio Cubero (University of Córdoba) who talked about the use of plants as biofactories & Dr Ying Zhang (University of Nottingham) who talked about the use of bacteria for biofuels, followed by a roundtable moderated by Dr Duncan Cameron (University of Sheffield) on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and a review of the current legislation focusing on the differences between Spain & UK.

    The SRUK- Southwest Constituency celebrates their annual local assembly at The White Hart in Bristol to inform about the updates of the constituency and discuss and approve the scientific and social events coming up. A new local constituency board was also elected with Manuel Nuño (Director), Antonio Fernández (Vice-Director) and Laura González (Secretary).

    Science Beers in Cambridge

    The SRUK- Cambridge Constituency organised a new local “Science Beers” event at The Panton Arms Pub to socialise and do some networking with local members. This event was also recorded and broadcasted by the Spanish TV channel “La Sexta TV”.

    III Meet the Scientist London

    3rd “Meet the Scientist” organised by the SRUK-London took place at Canal 125 in London with 4 guest speakers: Álex Pérez de Luque (University of Sheffield), Anna Andreou (Imperial College), Ana Tajadura (University College London) & Tomás Gonzalo (University College London) from different scientific backgrounds who presented their work in brief talks. This event was also recorded and broadcasted by the Spanish TV channel “La Sexta TV”.
